Drivers who passed their test before 1st January 2007 are all able to tow according to their driving licence, any one who passed after this date must contact the DVLA to see what restrictions their licence includes. Quite commonly, trailers and caravans over a certain weight need a further licence for permission to tow on the road. Although you do not need any experience in order to tow a small caravan, we advise that a towing caravan course may come in handy for those of you new to caravanning or with very little towing experience.
These courses are designed to help you practice towing a large trailer or caravan and helps inexperienced drivers to get some knowledge over the basics and builds confidence of towing on the roads.
These courses cover the principles of towing including any legal aspects, weights, and loading. They also explain the importance of having an appropriate tow vehicle .More practical aspects include towing in straight lines, reversing in narrow roads, manoeuvring a caravan onto a pitch and preventing any disasters such as ‘jack knifing’.
There are normally two options of course available. These include on a 1-2-1 basis or in small groups. Locations vary but are available nationwide and vary in price depending on the provider.
Further details are available online and are run by various different driving schools.

Caravan Security
Hitch locks are a superb deterrent to the opportunist thief. They prevent caravans from being quickly hitched up and towed away.
Some hitch locks come with a built in tamper alarm which sounds upon an attempt to remove the device.
If you are looking at your caravan security it is well worth considering corner steady locks as well. These lock down the rear corner steadies of you touring caravan. This prevents the front of the touring caravan from being raised.
As with wheel clamps, many insurance companies insist on them being a minimum level of caravan security in order to validate an insurance policy.
A wheel clamp is a simple devise to use and can be fitted in seconds. Wheel clamps help deter thiefs as they take time to remove and therefore increases the chances of them being caught.
When buying a wheel clamp the heavier and harder it is to get onto the wheel, the more difficult it will be for the thief to remove. You must also remember that you will have to take your wheel clamp on holiday with you so take your time when choosing your wheel clamp.

CRiS Registration
All caravans manufactured since 1992 by National Caravan Council members are recorded by CRiS on a national database by their unique 17 digit Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). This VIN and the caravan description are recorded on a Touring Caravan Registration Document, which is sent to the caravan's registered keeper, once it has been registerd with CRiS after the purchase of the touring caravan. Even if you own a pre-1992 caravan, or imported your own caravan into the UK, you can still register it with CRiS yourself.
You can apply for your caravan to be CRiS registered and electronically tagged. This can be done by contacting CRiS on 01722 411430 or email cris.uk@hpi.co.uk for further information.
If you insure your touring caravan at www.caravan-insurance.co.uk or www.parkhomeinsurance.com you will be required to provide the 17 digit CRiS Vehicle Identification Number.
